Contents Introduction


Special collections of distinguished scholars mainly collects and preserves various academic and cultural works, including monographs, translations, research achievements, and papers, produced by current and former Beijing University faculty, staff, and alumni.

Peking University Library also preserves personal book collections donated by renowned scholars, notable figures, and distinguished Peking University scholars from both China and abroad. Notable donators including figures like Hu Shih, Ji Xianlin, Hou Renzhi, Qian Duansheng, Su Bai, Donald Holzman, Han Suyin, Zhang Zhilian, Duan Baolin, and others.

  • Donald Holzman Collection

    Collection Scope: This collection is the donation of famous French sinologist Donald Holzman (1926-). This collection is mainly composed of books about sinology in Chinese and western languages.


  • Du Weiming Collection

    Collection Scope: Du Weiming is one of the representatives of contemporary Neo-Confucianism, donated his personal collection of books to the Peking University Library. His donation is mainly composed of humanities and social sciences, and literature related to Confucianism is an important feature. The books are mainly in Chinese and also contain literature in other languages such as English.


  • Hans-Joachim Mette Collection

    Collection Scope: Professor Hans-Joachim Mette is a German classical philologist, he presented his personal collection of Western books to the Peking University Library. This collection is mainly composed of books about Western classics in German, but also include Latin, English, French and other languages.


  • Hu Shih’s Personal Book Collection

    Collection Scope: This special collection consists of a portion of Hu Shih's Western-style books that remained in Beiping (now Beijing) at the end of 1948. It includes over 5,600 copies of Chinese books (with more than 1,000 cataloged), over 2,700 copies of western-language books (cataloged), and 312 copies of Japanese books (uncataloged). Within Hu Shih's collection, there are numerous inscriptions, annotations, underlining by Hu Shih himself, as well as inscriptions and signatures from others. This collection serves as an important reference for research on the development of Hu Shih's academic thoughts, academic networks, and intellectual history.


  • Qian Duansheng Collection

    Collection Scope: The private collections of famous scholar Qian Duansheng (1900-1990) of Peking University. The collection is composed of books about law, politics, philosophy, national government and parliament, national constitution, national history, diplomacy, international relations, and many other aspects.


  • Yu Dawei Collection

    Collection Scope: The private collection of Yu Dawei (1897-1993) and his son Yu Xiaoji, mainly composed of books of literature and history.


  • Zhang Zhilian Collection

    Collection Scope: The donation of professor Zhang Zhilian (1918-2008) of the Department of History of Peking University. This collection is composed of books about humanities and social sciences in Chinese and foreign languages. This collection is distinguishable because of its books about French history and other related books in French.


  • Zhao Baoxu Collection

    Collection Scope: The private collections of the famous professor Zhao Baoxu, a professor of politics in Peking University. This collection contains books of various aspects of Humanities and Social Sciences, especially of politics and international relations.

  • Archilles Fang Collection

    Collection Scope: Achilles Fang (1910-1995) was a Chinese-American scholar from Harvard University. His donation is mainly composed of books of various subjects of humanities and social sciences in western languages, some books about natural science are also included.


  • Books Donated by Hou Renzhi Books Donated by Hou Renzhi

    Collection Scope: Personal donated books from Mr. Hou Renzhi (1911-2013), academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and renowned historical geographer. The collection primarily focuses on historical geography, especially the historical geography of Beijing.

  • Duan Baolin Collection Duan Baolin Collection

    Collection Scope:  Duan Baolin is the professor in the Department of Chinese Language and Literature of Peking University. His donation is mainly composed of folk literature, folk art and folklore, and literature in Chinese mainland. Literatures from Macau, Japan, South Korea, Canada and the United states of America are also included.


  • Elisabeth Comber Collection

    Collection Scope: The donation of Chinese-English writer Elisabeth Comber (1917-2012). The collection is mainly composed of books of Literature and Historical Geography in different languages, including Chinese, Japanese, English and France.



  • Huang Hua Collection

    Collection Scope: Huang Hua (1913-2010) was an alumnus of Yenching University, who had worked as Vice Premier and vice chairman of the National People's Congress. His donations are mainly books in Chinese and English, which are about politics, diplomacy, history, the history of the Communist Party of China and the general situation of all countries in the world.


  • Ji Xianlin Collection

    Collection Scope: The donation from Ji Xianlin, the professor of the Department of Orientalism of the Peking University. Part of them belonged to the private collections of professor Ji, and part of them were gifts from other scholars.


  • Su Bai Collection Su Bai Collection

    Collection Scope: The donation of famous archaeologist Su Bai. This collection is mainly about humanities and social sciences, especially archaeology and history. The books and periodicals are mainly in Chinese, but English and Japanese literatures are also included.
