Quick Start & FAQs
Question 1: How do new students borrow books?

Open-shelf books can be borrowed using the self-service borrowing machines near the reading room (by swiping your campus card or using the library WeChat Mini Program to generate a borrowing QR code and scanning it), or you can go to the main service desk on the first floor, where librarians can assist you with borrowing.

For closed shelves borrowing , Changping storage library , on-campus storage library , and branch libraries , please refer to the corresponding borrowing instructions.

If you encounter any problems, you can seek assistance from librarians at the service desk.

Please take good care of borrowed books to avoid loss.

Question 2: How do I log in to the library homepage and use "My Library" account?

On the library homepage, click "My Library" in the upper right corner, enter your campus portal username and password (for all new students, your username is your student ID, and the initial password is the last six digits of your registration ID card number; if the last digit is a letter, move it one digit earlier), and you can log in to your personal account.

In "My Library" account, you can view your borrowing status, holding status, borrowing history, and other information.

Readers are advised to provide their frequently used email address and mobile phone number in "My Library" for receiving library book due reminders. Library email reminders are only auxiliary reminders for returning books on time. Readers should actively pay attention to the due dates of borrowed books and return them promptly to avoid affecting their borrowing privileges.

Question 3: How many books can be borrowed with a library card?

Undergraduate, master's, and doctoral students can borrow up to 60 books. Please refer to the specific instructions in the “Borrowing Rules”.

If books are overdue or there are accumulated reminders for return, borrowing privileges will be suspended. Please refer to the specific instructions in the “Regulations of Overdue, Damage, Loss and Concealing of Library Materials" .

Question 4: How long can books be borrowed from the library?

Generally, books can be borrowed for 1 month. If there is no holds before the due date, they can be renewed. Each renewal extends the borrowing period by 1 month, with a maximum of 5 renewals.

For popular books with more than 2 holds, the borrowing period is 14 days and cannot be renewed.

Books in the General Knowledge Reading Hall on the first floor can only be borrowed for 48 hours, and exceeding the 48-hour limit is considered overdue.

Kindle, Pad, and other electronic devices for loan generally cannot be renewed.

Question 5: What should I do if I lose a book borrowed from the library?

Readers are responsible for taking care of the borrowed books. If a book is lost, there are two options for resolution: 1. Replacing the book: Purchase the same edition of the lost book for compensation (new editions from the same publisher require approval) and pay a processing fee of 20 yuan per book. 2. Paying for the book: If you cannot find a replacement for the lost book, according to the “Regulations of Overdue, Damage, Loss and Concealing of Library Materials "  you need to pay the compensation for the lost book (the compensation amount is determined based on the original price and year of publication of the book) and a processing fee of 20 yuan per book.

Both you and the library suffer immeasurable losses in this situation. The library sincerely hopes that readers will respect knowledge and cherish books.

Question 6: How can I know when the book I placed hold is available for borrowing?

Readers can log in to their "My Library" account to check the borrowing status. When the hold book is shown as "available for borrowing," you can go to the main borrowing and returning desk on the first floor to collect the hold book. At the same time, the system will send a reminder email to the reader's registered email address and a reminder message to the registered mobile phone number.

Question 7: How do I check out books with hold?

When you receive a notification or the hold status shows that the book is available for borrowing, main campus readers can go to the main borrowing and returning desk on the first floor with their campus card (or use the library WeChat Mini Program to generate a borrowing QR code) to complete the borrowing process. Hold books will be held at the desk for 2 days, and if not check out within this period, the hold will be cancelled, and the book will be transferred to the next person in line or returned to the shelves. Medical campus readers and readers from the six medical branch libraries should check out the hold books at the library they specified when placing the hold.

Readers can directly log into their personal accounts on the library homepage to renew the books they want, or use the library WeChat mini program or official account for renewal.

Note: Readers can only renew books that are not overdue. The due date for the renewed book will be extended by one borrowing period from the date of renewal.

(a)Self-service Return

2、Recall Reminder

"Recall Reminder" refers to the situation where a book in the "Borrowed" status is holded by another reader. The system will send reminders to the current borrower through email, SMS, etc., reminding them to return the book before the "Reminder Due Date" based on the hold request. After receiving the reminder, readers should return the book before the "Reminder Due Date". Once the book is returned, it will be lent to the person who made the hold.

The rules for Recall reminders are as follows:

Current Borrowing Period: The current borrower can use the book for at least one borrowing period (generally one month, 14 days for popular books with more than 2 holds). After one borrowing period (even if it has been renewed), the system will send an email reminder to the current borrower to return the book as soon as possible based on the hold request.

Reminder Expiration: After one borrowing period, the system sets a 10-day return period. The current borrower needs to return the holded book within 10 days. If the book is not returned within 10 days (Reminder Due Date), it will be considered as an expired reminder.

If a reader has 3 or more expired reminders among the borrowed books, their borrowing privileges will be suspended (account locked) until the holded books are returned.

Important reminders:

Sending of Reminder Notifications: If readers have a "student ID numberpku.edu.cn" email provided by the university or have registered a personal email in the library system, the reminder notifications will be sent to these two types of email addresses. If readers do not have these types of email addresses, they can log into the library homepage and add their personal email address in the system through "Modify Email".

Pay Attention to Borrowing Status: If the "Reminder Due Date" is shown with a specific date in the borrowing list, it is a reminder that the book needs to be returned before the "Reminder Due Date".

Materials Available

In addition to borrowing books from the open-shelf, closed-shelf, and storage collections at Peking University Main Library, readers can also borrow books from the branch libraries of various schools and departments (link to the branch library borrowing page). Additionally, they can utilize the interlibrary loan service (link to 1.5 Interlibrary Loan/Document Delivery) to borrow books from libraries outside of Peking University.
