Professor Daniel C. Waugh is an internationally renowned scholar of Russian history and Silk Road studies. He joined the University of Washington in 1972 and has been a professor in the Department of History, the Jackson School of International Studies, and the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures. He directed the Russian, East European and Central Asian Studies Program from 1991 to 1996 and retired with emeritus status in 2006. His research spans early Russian history, Central Asian studies and Silk Road studies. He has long served as the editor-in-chief of The Silk Road, the scholarly annual journal published by the Silk Road Foundation. He maintains close academic ties with Chinese scholars and has actively followed and participated in academic exchanges on Silk Road themes.
According to Professor Zhu Yuqi, Professor Waugh's collection of materials on Russian history and Silk Road studies is distinctive. His holdings on Russia are acquired through channels different from existing collections in China. The full acquisition of this collection will strongly complement Peking University Library's existing holdings and carries significant academic value.
The Library is now undertaking systematic sorting and cataloguing of the collection. It is expected to further enrich the library holdings and support disciplinary development and scholarly research in Russian history, Central Asian studies, Silk Road studies and related fields.
