Introduction

PKU library is one of the earliest libraries in China that collects newspapers and periodicals. There are more than 10,000 kinds of periodicals and more than 600 kinds of newspapers published during the Late Qing Dynasty and the Republican Period, and over 50,000 copies of books published in the Republican period are collected in PKU library. With one of the largest collection in China, the PKU library also obtains different kinds of only existing copy and rare editions, which is cherished by many collectors and scholars. These collections are mainly composed of the books once obtained by the old Peking University and Yenching University, and some books from l'Université Franco-Chinoise and Deutschland-Institut. The newspapers and books published during the Late Qing Dynasty and the Republican Period are of much importance to the studies on the modernization of China, including the aspects of ideological and academic, military and politics, education and culture, language and literature, social customs as well.

Regulations

Fee Schedule for borrowing Chinese newspapers and periodicals before 1949 by non-Peking University readers

The library's old Chinese newspapers and periodicals mainly serve the readers on campus. If Off-campus readers have to come to our library for special needs, they will be charged appropriately. The standards are as follows:


1.Fees are calculated on the basis of bound volumes. In principle, unbound loose publications are charged on an annual basis (one year is counted as one bound volume).


2.As for the national unique edition and the newspapers and periodicals published before 1911, the domestic and foreign readers are charged 5 RMB per volume. For newspapers and periodicals published in 1911-1949, domestic readers are charged 3 RMB per volume, while foreign readers will be charged 5 RMB per volume.


3.If the borrowed periodicals cannot be read on the same day, they will be handed over to the staff for retention, and those who continue to borrow the periodicals on the next day and subsequent days will be charged at 50% of the original rate per day.


4.Collaborative projects between on-campus readers and other organizations (non-Peking University scientific research projects), the fees shall be charged according to the above standards.


Rules and Fee Schedule for copying Pre-1949 Chinese Old Newspapers by Off-Campus Readers


1.Full copy or batch copy are not provided (batch-copy is defined as copying more than one-third of the content of a single issue). For batch copying, proof of the relevant scientific research project must be presented and approved by the head of the library.


2.In principle, only photographic reproduction is permitted, and electrostatic copying is not available.


3. Fee Schedule for photocopying


Photographic reproduction is done by the readers themselves and the standard of material fee is as follows:


For the national unique and periodicals published before 1911, domestic readers will be charged 6 RMB per exposure, and foreign readers will be charged 12 RMB per exposure.


For the Republic of China newspapers and periodicals in 1911-1949, domestic readers will be charged 3 RMB per exposure, and foreign readers will be charged 6 RMB per exposure.


For publication purposes, approval of the library director is required and the cost of the base copy will be charged.
