On May 8, 2023, the opening ceremony of the exhibition “As High as Mountains and as Long as Rivers: Commemorating the 130th Anniversary of Gu Jiegang’s Birth and the Donation of Gu Jiegang’s Manuscripts” was held in the Peking University Library Art Appreciation Hall. The ceremony was attended by Gu’s relatives, Zhang Zhensheng, Gu Yuan, Gu Dekan, as well as Secretary of the PKU Party Committee Hao Ping and PKU Vice President Sun Qingwei. The ceremony was moderated by Zheng Qingwen, Secretary of the PKU Library Party Committee.
Gu Jiegang’s diligent and rigorous attitude towards learning, and his profound and deep knowledge of his field – were all vividly presented in the donated manuscripts. The donated manuscripts are an extensive collection of academic manuscripts, notes based on discussions with teachers and friends, lecture notes during Gu’s days as a at PKU, reading notes taken over several decades of study, lecture notes and examination questions during his tenure as a teacher, journal entries that were kept for more than 60 years, family letters, personal address books and ledgers, appointment letters and personal registers, essays written during secondary school, and even loose pages of handwriting practice from his early childhood. This was one of the most important donations received by PKU in recent years, both in terms of academic and cultural value.
Gu’s manuscripts were not only invaluable academic and cultural heritage of PKU, but also an important legacy of modern China’s academic and intellectual history. Gu’s academic thought was a splendid chapter in PKU’s academic history. With the continuous efforts of later generations, his academic spirit will continue to flourish and be passed on.
